One of the main puposes of this abbey was to be the burial place for the Kings of Kent and the Archbishops of Canterbury. Over the subsequent hundreds of years, the building was gradually added to and changed until the 1500s, when it was a huge site, with an enormous library, housing over 2000 volumes.
The abbey was dismantled over fifteen years from 1538 due to Henry 8th's Dissolution of the Monasteries. However, part of the building was coverted to a palace for the arrival of Anne of Cleves, from Germany.
Nowadays it is a World Heritage site in the care of English Heritage. MORE...
