 The Dane John is a cone-shaped mound, about 80 feet high, dating back to pre-Norman times. It used to have a Norman keep on top of it, but now has a memorial to Alderman Simmons who was responsible for much of the landscaping of the Dane John Gardens. A spiral footpath leads to the top of this mound. The gardens themselves were renovated in 1999 and now provide a welcome oasis of natural peace away from the bustle of the town.
