 A church is thought to have existed on this site since Roman times, since the Tower incorporates Roman tiles. However, Parish registers date only from 1590. The church was closed for repair in 1872, after being threatened with demolition. Thereafter, it was restored and thrived until 1926, when services were once again suspended and most of the interior of the church was removed, including the organ.It wasn't until over 20 years later, that the Friends of St Peters began restoration and in 1959, the church re-opened and was restored with a new Rector.
